As parents and caregivers, we make sacrifices and decisions to ensure the strongest start for our children. Many families in Arizona rely on child care to be able to work or attain higher education—whether through a licensed facility, an in-home provider or a family, friend or neighbor.
Child care might not typically seem like something to take action for. But Arizona is facing a child care crisis—too often, it’s unaffordable, inaccessible or unreliable. Advocating for policies that expand access to affordable, high-quality child care helps ensure every child has the chance to thrive—and every parent has the opportunity to succeed.
This month, parents, caregivers, educators, policymakers and community members will come together for Early Childhood Day at the Capitol. An event led by Arizona Early Childhood Alliance, allowing the public to take action for meaningful change in Arizona’s early childhood system. It’s a chance to help create a brighter future for the youngest children in our communities.
Even if you can’t attend the event in person, there are several ways you can take a stand for early childhood education from wherever you are.
Ways to Stand Up for Early Childhood Education
Your voice matters. When you call on community leaders and changemakers, you can help make sure Arizona’s leaders know early childhood education is a priority. Here are a few ways to take action:
1. Write a Letter to Your Legislators
Sharing your story is one of the most powerful ways to make an impact. Let your legislator know how access to quality child care or early education—or lack thereof—has made a difference in your life. Whether it’s a handwritten letter or a quick email, your message can help shape decisions that affect children and families across the state.
2. Call Your Legislators
A simple phone call can be just as impactful as a letter. Most legislators’ offices keep records of the calls they receive. Taking just a few minutes to share why early childhood education matters to you can leave a lasting impression.
3. Post on Social Media
Social media is a quick way to spread the word about the importance of early childhood education. First Things First has downloadable images and captions you can use to post on social media. Use your platform to share stories, statistics or even a quick post about why you’re standing up for early education. Be sure to tag your legislator, employer or community leader and use #AZECDay.
Why Your Voice Matters
Children’s earliest years are a critical time for brain development, setting the stage for a lifetime of learning and growth. By advocating for stronger early childhood support, you’re helping ensure that every child in Arizona has access to the opportunities they deserve, like:
- High-quality early learning programs that prepare kids for success in school and life.
- Affordable and reliable child care that supports working families.
- Family resource centers that offer parenting support and education, developmental screenings and more.
Standing up for early childhood education isn’t a one-time thing—it’s an ongoing effort for this generation of young children and future ones. By staying connected to First Things First and similar organizations, you can stay informed about opportunities to get involved.
When parents and caregivers speak up, changemakers listen. Your voice can encourage long-term investments needed to support young children and families in Arizona.
